The kids had mid-morning flights home so we joined them in Key West so they could head to the Key West airport after breakfast. We had breakfast at Blue Heaven on Petronia street in the heart of old Key West. Blue Heaven also own owns Salute! On The Beach restaurant that we went to for dinner on Monday night. Everyone wanted a final dinner at the Square Grouper but they were closed on Sunday and Monday until after Christmas. Another excuse why they need to make another trip!
The Blue Heaven restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining usually with chickens and roosters roaming the outdoor areas while you dine. This morning we had a resident cat sitting near us. I had to look twice to make sure it was a real, live cat as it was sitting perfectly still. Breakfast was delicious. I am sorry I didn’t try the lobster benedict but their Rooster Special came with Betty’s banana bread that I wanted. It was delicious!
According to the info on their homepage, the location has many uses in the past including “cock fighting, gambling and Friday night boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway. The outdoor courtyard is paved with the slate pool table tops from the days when the downstairs operated as a billard hall and ice cream parlour. A dance hall, a bordello and a playhouse have occupied the second floor. Today inside the Bordello Gallery above the restaurant, one can still peek through the sliding peep holes into the tiny rooms.”
When we got back to the Dirt Yacht our neighbor Bruce asked us if we wanted to join them on a quick trip out to Snipe Point. We have been wanting to get out there so even thought it was a little cool, the wind had finally died down enough to make the trip. We have small craft warnings predicted for the weekend so this was a great way to spend the afternoon. After fueling up we met Bruce along with several other neighbors at Tarpon Belly Key. Instead of heading out through Cudjoe Channel, Bruce led us through Johnston Key Channel. This way saved us a couple of miles on the trip.. Once we hit the Gulf it got a little rough but nothing the Mako couldn’t handle.
We did not have any problems getting to our destination but you really have to watch your charts, or know where you are going. Lots of skinny water. Snipe Point is a local hangout, especially on the weekends. Bruce told us on a warm Saturday or Sunday it is tough to find a place to anchor your boat. The waves were too rough to let us beach the boat like we can on some of our other favorite spots. Instead we would have to anchor out and wade ashore Today the waves were too rough to get very close and it was too cool to want to get wet. That would have been a very cold ride home. The water temperature at Snipe has dropped to 69.7 so we decided to just stay on the boat. I could not take too much of the rocking, so we left the others and headed back in. I was on the lookout for manatees but the only thing we saw was a Great Whiite Heron.
