Before we left Chicken, we had breakfast at the RV campground. Breakfast was cooked by Mike’s wife and the wonderful gift shop is run by their daughter. It’s a family operation! We picked up a few small gifts but unfortunately the t-shirt Randy wanted was not available in his size. It is still one of the better gift shops on this trip!
We left early again but it didn’t take long before John and Carol passed us. We stopped for our scavenger hunt photo at the Mt. Fairplay Wayside. There is a viewing platform at this stop with excellent view of Mount Fairplay If you take the small root covered trail you will find another viewpoint. This is the entrance to the Fortymile Mining District that is the second oldest mining district in Alaska. It first produced gold in 1886. Claims were filed in both Alaska and Canada because of uncertainties in boundaries. Even with the stop, it took less than 3 hours to make it to the Tok RV Village where we were able to wash the RV and Jeep. Randy helped John and Carol and then Jim helped us wash our rig. There was a long line by the time we were done. Randy and I both said if we ever came back to Alaska, we would not take the “Top of the World” Highway unless we were in a very small RV or unless major repairs are made to the road. I loved Dawson City and Chicken, but doubt we will be back.
